Maya (not that)
HD video, sound, color, 4' 39", 2013
English+Korean subtitle

Maya (not that) creates a narrative based on a multicultural understanding of a name. The title of this video is borrowed from the real name of the main character, Maya Jeffereis. In Sanskrit the word "Maya" means "an illusion." This present work departs from the belief that we do not experience the environment itself but rather a projection of it. Juxtaposing Mayan mythology with aspects of the director's own Korean identity, Yi personalizes collective cultural memories through words, images and sound.
